Abstract

For mixed electronic and ionic conducting (MIEC) oxides with potential applications for solid oxide cells (SOCs), high efficiency of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), fast electronic and ionic conductivity, as well as good stability, are desirable prerequisites. On the contrary, cation migration and segregation on the surface are normally unfavourable phenomena. Among different potential complex oxides, perovskite-structured (ABO3) oxides are of particular interest due to its high tolerance of foreign ions at both cation and anion sites which can result in interesting modification of properties.

Oxygen isotope-coupled techniques have been developed to pave the way for studying the oxygen surface exchange and bulk diffusion behaviour, for example, isotopic exchange depth profiling with secondary ion mass spectrometry (IEDP-SIMS), pulsed isotopic exchange (PIE), isotopic exchange Raman spectroscopy (IERS) etc. In this talk, different techniques will be introduced and discussed with results on the model perovskite-structured materials. In addition, surface analysis techniques for the surface and interface chemistry studies as well as electrochemical measurements for electrochemical performance of the materials were also performed in order to investigate the potential possibilities for the electrochemical devices such as SOCs.
