“ Cycle Assessment and its use for novel technologies”

Abstract

New technologies, including materials, products and processes, are often expected to contribute to the reduction of environmental damages of our industrial society: climate change, non-renewable resources consumption, land use, water pollution, etc. A novel technology can be well-known at a laboratory or a pilot scale in terms of the infrastructure required for its support and its effects on the environment that it generates. However the environmental impact of this technology introduction in the industrial system (current or future) is hardly anticipated. A systemic and predictive environmental impact model for up-scaled technologies, processes or products is required. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)has been the most advanced tool to evaluate the environmental impacts along an technological systems for a few decades. Nevertheless, adaptations need to be made to anticipate the impacts of upscaling a novel technology within an environmental damage perspective. This presentation will provide a general presentation of LCA and on-going researches for its application to novel technologies, and an opening to societal impact considerations.
